Wilpattu borders in the North western coast in the dry zone of the lower lands. The prime feature of this National park is its lakes. The whole of this National Park contains nearly 60 lakes within its premises. As the name derives, Wilpattu means ten lakes, “wil” meaning lake and “pattu” means ten in Tamil. Wilpattu is one of the largest and the oldest National Parks in the country and among the top listed because of its huge collection of birds, hence the National Park is well known as a bird sanctuary. Among the many resident bird species found Wilpattu is famed for its migratory bird species seasonally. Wilpattu is a land amidst the birds!!
